Welcome to the BLOG of Matthew E. Taft!

I live in Southern California with my wife, two children, and two cats. I have many interests and have been involved in many different things throughout my life. I was in a local band for years called Edge of Mortality. I used to skateboard for a now-nonexistant company called Witness Skateboards. I volunteered for the Youth Crisis Hotline, which is also now no longer in existence. At nineteen, I moved to Germany, where I worked at an English / German speaking church as a Youth Leader / Music Leader / Janitor / Assistant Pastor / etc. Since I returned to the United States I have worked as Operations Manager for a medical software company.

I began reading for my own pleasure in eighth grade, when my brother forced me to read the Sword of Shannarah by Terry Brooks--it was all he got me for Christmas and we were stuck at the grandparent's house with not much else to do. Since then I have been hooked on reading and writing fantasy. For a few years I drifted away, being more involved in music, but with the birth of my first son, the desire came back. I began to write the story I began in my eighth grade English class.

It has now been over four years, and the process of writing is slow when you've got a full-time job and a family that you want to see last a lifetime. But I am determined. I have written close to 300 pages, and I am plowing away.

I still write some music occasionally and, for variety during my long novel-writing journey, experiment with short stories and poetry that are nothing like my novel.

With this blog I intend to post mostly things concerning writing--whether it be a poem, a short story, or an excerpt from my novel. I'm not sure yet about that last part. I guess we'll see how it goes.
